THE BURMESE CAT
(DR. WAYNE’S "PRIDE & PREJUDICE")

Dr. Wayne is a cat guy – plain and simple
That he is dreadfully allergic to cats is another story altogether (or as he would say – a horse of a different color). He takes a boatload of medicines, and yes, the cats have still slept in our room. Years ago when he treated (and played with - yes, really) a number of tigers and lions, he was allergic to them as well. He is allergic to other things as well, but not nearly as much so as to cats. Now, ironically enough, he may be even more allergic to Burmese cats than to other cats (years of exposure).

Dr. Wayne has had Burmese cats (usually two – but occasionally one) since his freshman year of veterinary school 35 years ago. Although he enjoys all cats (he’s quite the cat guy), he is highly biased in favor of this breed. His two Burmese come to work with him everyday, and they go home with him every night.
The breed has one - and only one - characteristic going for it. That is, the Burmese is the sweetest of all cats. Now, granted, lots of other cats are sweet. But all Burmese cats are sweet. Really. Repeat - all Burmese cats are sweet.
Burmese must be kept indoors (all cats should be kept indoors). Burmese cats simply do not do outdoors – period, no discussion.
Burmese cats do best when they are either the only cat, or preferably one of two Burmese cats. These cats need a very great deal of human attention – repeat – a very great deal of human attention. Expect them to sleep with you and follow you into the bathroom.
What you want:
- a kitten – preferably 8–10 weeks old. (the younger the better)
- brown only – called sable (not tan – called champagne)
- male or female
- Tell breeder you want the sweetest and friendliest of the litter. Ask the breeder to pick out for you this sweetest and friendliest of the litter.

This is a hoot in itself. Anticipate significant Burmese prejudice.
All Breeds
Dr. Wayne loves his Burmese. No bout adoubt it. We are all allowed our passions & prejudices (well, the good kind of prejudices). But he very much enjoys all cats. He & wife Wendy have owned non Burmese cats as well.
We just said Dr. Wayne enjoys all cats. This is true. Well, ask him sometime about his experiences with the ‘big cats’. Many years ago, he had a unique & wonderful experience helping and working with the big kitties – (mainly Siberians - tigers, that is). And then ask Wendy to tell you the story about what happened to her while she & he were walking in the tiger pen (with 2 awake tigers), after he talked her into helping him. Wendy always says the two of them are up for an adventure of one type or another.
